A Scam is Lusting...Then What's a Date?

I am going through one of those phases in my life where I feel like I'll be alone forever and don't really care for it. There is a show just ended on VH1 called Tough Love that took women who were having trouble forming committed relationships and put them through a boot camp in order for them to assess what they were doing wrong with men. If I wouldn't find it completely mortifying for people I know to see me on a show like that I would totally do it. Even though I know what I'm doing wrong, maybe they would know how to fix it. Anyway, there was one girl, about 22 I think, that wanted desperately to get married and the man from her previous long term relationship just wouldn't commit. She found someone the very first day and dated him the whole time she was there. She kept telling him it was over with the other guy and that she could tell he was sincere and wonderful blah, blah, blah. Her ex was waiting for her at the airport with a ring, she dumped the perfect guy and then eventually broke up with the airport guy because he couldn't commit. I kind of felt like someone had punched me in the gut. I wanted so bad for that relationship to work for some reason.

If you're still reading, I think it's obvious I might get a little too invested in cinematic relationships. At any rate, all of these thoughts have made me consider my movie list for young women. I have formulated a mental list that I believe all single ladies should watch in order to understand the broad spectrum of relationships with men. If I ever have a daughter I'm totally gonna make her watch all of them. Anyway since my memory isn't what it used to be I'm not sure I've included everything, but the list goes a little something like this (in no particular order):

1. Say Anything: It shows that there are in fact guys out there that are capable of falling completely in love. Just look for your Lloyd Dobbler driving around in his blue Chevy Malibu. Or try calling 555-1342. Side note...I tried to do a screen printing project with Lloyd outside of the window holding up the stereo while the chick is inside doing it with another dude. My teacher "didn't get it."

2. The Village: This movie shows that love doesn't have to be stupidly dramatic. It can be simple and quiet. It's still love.

3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: One of my all time favorite movies. Michel Gondry is an ingenius filmmaker. This movie is the opposite of The Village in that it shows how messy love gets and that sometimes you wish it never happened. It shows the pain and aftermath. Despite all that, it also shows that love is out of our control and that sometimes people are drawn to each other even if you try to hold back.

4. Prime: This movie is not what I expected. I also have to confess I have a small crush on the leading man. He's pretty adorable. I was really iffy about this movie, but ultimately I decided it did a really good job of showing that you can share a fantastic love with some one without that person being "the one." Sometimes you have relationships just to learn from them. The Break-Up also does this, but not as well. That movie just makes me sad.

5. Shopgirl: I really hate Claire Danes and Steve Martin opposite each other. Utterly ridiculous. If you can get past that, you can see that this movie illustrates how two people can be in the same relationship and view it completely differently.

6. In the Company of Men: the movie is very poorly made. It is a directorial debut for Neil LaBute and done on a very low budget. I've found I like most movies with Aaron Eckhart. Anyway, it shows how cruel people can be in relationships. How dishonest and disgusting. It shows all that without being graphic and vulgar.

7. Closer: Now this movie is both graphic and vulgar. Really, really vulgar. It's also very good and can be gut-wrenching depending on your mood. It illustrates how you can be with someone for years, be as intimate with him/her as possible, and still know very little about him/her. And the soundtrack is pretty good.

I think that mostly covers everything. I reserve the right to edit later.

One Day My Life Will Be Legen...Wait For It...

I still haven't been feeling any better. That was a little surprise to me since (earmuffs to the boys) I was pretty sure I was depressed just because of my severe PMS. It's gotten pretty bad since I'm not on birth control anymore (ok I'm done). Anyway, my mood just really hasn't improved so I guess I need to figure out something else. I'm kind of tired of hanging out with myself. I'm really just not that interesting.

This past weekend was kind of fun though. A friend from middle and high school came to see me. We went out and had a good time despite the awkwardness of not seeing each other in seven years. We met up with a girl he knew and she was a character. She was definitely the hippiest girl I've met down here yet. She's actually about to move here from Wrightsville Beach so I guess that's why. At one point she said, "Hold on let me find my patchouli." I thought I misheard her until she pulled out a perfume stick and put it all over herself. I almost couldn't breathe. That is one of my least favorite smells I can think of.

Yesterday my good friend from The Library came to visit. She lives in Arizona now and was in town for her cousin's wedding. We had a lot of fun walking around historic Charleston. It's easy to forget how beautiful it is when I live in icky shopping district Mt Pleasant. Looking at all the architecture and landscaping prompted some discussion about personal style and some Eames furniture I want to one day own and how I want a crystal decanter set one day.

Ginny was making fun of how old I sound, but she also kept saying I could register for some of those things when I get married. She is in a serious relationship. I have not had someone I've called my boyfriend in 2 1/2 years. I think it would be creepy to jump to thinking about the wedding registry. Next date I go on I'll go ahead and tell the guy, "Oh, and don't worry, I've already registered for us. I'll just add your name to the heading."

How I Met Your Mother came on last night and I've been pretty disappointed with the writing since the writer's strike, but I watch it anyway because it's a compulsion. Plus, I want to know who the mother is. This episode revealed it. I was mad. It is stupid Elliot from Scrubs. Or stupid replacement Becky from Roseanne. Otherwise known as stupid Stella from How I Met Your Mother. The actual episode is about how you have to be at the right place at the right time for certain things to happen in your life. It's an idea that has already been explored on the show and is also something that most people already realized. That aside, Jason Segel is hilarious on the show. He plays Marshall and there was a moment on the show that made me belly laugh to the point that I startled Jamie's dog. Don't worry she didn't pee everywhere. Anyway it's really just the second graph from this clip that made me laugh.

Warren, Where Does This Hostility Come From?

I'll tell you where: being stuck in a job that is complete bullshit that compromises almost everything I believe in. Sure I make a respectable amount of money and I'm extremely fortunate to have a job at all. I certainly appreciate being employed. I just wish that I didn't have to work at a place that serves almost nothing fresh or homemade. Or at a place where my primary job is to get people intoxicated so they can make asses of themselves.

Tonight I had my first fake ID attempt. It was actually laminated like with a home laminator. He kept it in his wallet which is why you're always supposed to take your ID out when carded. It also didn't have a hologram so I tried to take it out of his wallet. It was stuffed so full I couldn't get it so I asked him to and he said, "Oh I don't think it really comes out. Just get me a water." Then some people started laughing. I never tried to use a fake when I was underage. I think it takes a weird kind of arrogance to try to pull that off.

The rest of the night didn't go any better. It was very busy and I probably had six total customers tip me over 15 %. It seemed like 10% was really where people felt comfortable. I was also yelled at and cussed out by a customer for reasons too ridiculous to get into. The printers went down a couple different times. Because I was trying to put an order in while the previous customer yelled and cussed, I messed up a table. It was really just a string of events that made me want to pull out my hair, fashion it into a rope and hang myself from the dock in the hopes of asphyxiation by drowning or the act of hanging itself.

I just think the whole idea of a restaurant is kind of weird. You go somewhere and have someone retrieve your drinks. Then it's like a game of telephone. You have to express what you want to the server. The server then has to figure out how to communicate that to the kitchen through the computer or shorthand. Then the kitchen staff has to read the tickets. The expeditor checks the work and then when the food is taken out like a test to see if the telephone game was a success.

The people that I work with are all pretty nice. Nicer than the last place for sure. The majority of the people who work there are a few years younger and basicaly just want to be drunk 24/7. I don't get it. I would describe the average girl as being a "Becky." If you don't know what that means, please refer to the Sir Mix-a-Lot song "Baby Got Back." One girl walks around with her boobs and ass sticking out like something I've never seen. I don't know how you can keep your back arched for so long. They all get hammered regularly and then complain that they don't have any money. I'm not really sure I follow your logic there. Another girl thinks it's funny to ring in tickets with messages to the kitchen that say things like "No make in the butt." Actually most people who work there thought that was hilarious. Becky A played a joke on Becky B by labeling one of her tables "Up your butt and around Daytona." Becky B also has the tendency to smack everyone on the butt, including me, and say, "Good game!"...Yeah.

There are a couple girls that I get along with pretty well, but I still just don't have any friends down here. I'm really not sure I even want to try and make friends anymore. It's exhausting. I went out with a group of people from work the first week I was there and one of the guys I guess took a liking to me. He's a dishwasher and he mumbles worse than anyone I've ever met so I have to get him to repeat himself like three times. About the only thing I can understand right away is when he demands that I smile. That is the one word someone can say to me and instantly make me angry. It's the verbal equivalent to throwing something at my head. "Smile"..."Um, fuck you." He said something completely lame to me one night as a "joke." I didn't smile. He said, "What I can't even get a smile or chuckle or nothin' anymore?" I said, "I smile and laugh when something is funny." I'm tell you I just don't have the energy to make friends.

If I don't get a teaching job in the fall I don't know what I'll do. I really need to progress in my life. I just can't do this anymore. The whole time I'm at work it's like my insides are shrieking steadily until I clock out.

Ok, I'm done complaining. I've bought some summer clothes and some new work shoes so I have those to look forward to. I also bought some containers for my records and my magazines, so I can get more organized. Also, The Office was really funny this week.
